| Safety Committee The Chapter and its membership are committed to improving the safety and health of all employees in the industry. The Safety Committee works to provide members with the latest information on technological developments; changing legislation and specifications – state and federal; and preventive measures they can implement to help protect their work force. The committee is comprised of contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and insurers, as well as DOT, FHWA, OSHA and Thruway representatives.
Training is offered through DOL grants, seminars, speakers and paid trainers in order to keep the latest information on techniques in front of the industry. The group keeps Work Zone Safety on the front burner advocating for police presence and enforcement in work zones, as well as specification and regulation changes and public awareness initiatives.
Related to this committee is a Task Group on Workers Compensation and Insurance. Safety performance directly impacts the expense of insurance and the basis for workers compensation rates.
The committee meets bi-monthly while the task group meets as needed.
The Chapter and its membership are committed to improving the safety and health of all employees in the industry. The Safety Committee works to provide members with the latest information on emerging technologies; changing specifications, both state and federal; and preventative measures they can implement to protect their workforce. Each bimonthly Safety Committee meeting provides member firms with a forum to address NYSDOT, FHWA, NYSTA, and OSHA personnel about issues. Additionally, the committee often has guest speakers present on such topics as: setting up a drug and alcohol testing program; the dangers of trench rescues; increasing police presence in work zones, and fleet management.
