Safety Services

The New York State Chapter works to provide members with the latest information on emerging technologies; changing specifications, both state and federal; and preventative measures they can implement to protect their workforce. Through bimonthly Safety Committee meetings, safety workshops and training sessions; and safety inspections the Chapter is committed to working with its members and government agencies to help our members achieve their goals of providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.

Safety Consultation Services

Through a New York State Department of Labor Hazard Abatement Board Grant, the Chapter in 2006/07 will provide a limited amount of in-house safety training, OSHA 10-hour courses, and job site inspections. Please at the Chapter if you have a need for these services.

Handouts from recent Safety Committee presentations are available to all AGC members.

General Safety Information

The New York State AGC Safety Committee has worked on developing various guidelines, programs and reports to help promote construction safety throughout the state. Many of these programs are available free to members on this website.

State & National Safety Awards

Each year, the New York State Chapter AGC issues Safety Awards based on a firm’s lost workday case incidence rate from the previous year. All AGC contractor and subcontractor members are encouraged to submit their Lost Workday Case Incidence Rate to be eligible for the AGC Safety Awards. Awards are presented at the AGC/DOT Technical Conference, held each year in December.

Winners for the 2004 work year, announced at the 2005 Tech Conference.

The awards criteria are as follows:

  • Gold Safety Award for rate of 0-1.0
  • Silver Safety Award for rate of 1.01 to 2.0
  • Bronze Safety Award for rate of 2.01 to 3.0

Each company must submit a copy of their previous year's OSHA 300 form to the New York State Chapter, 10 Airline Drive, Suite 203, Albany, NY 12205, Attn: Safety Awards by October 1, 2006.

Formula for determining the Lost Workday Case Incidence Rate (LWIR):
OSHA Lost Workday Accidents; multiplied by 200,000; divided by Total Manhours Worked; equals LWIR.

  • Example: A firm with 2 Lost Workday Accidents (as submitted on your OSHA 300 form) and 57,000 manhours worked would have an LWIR of 7.02 (2 x 200,000 ÷ 57,000 = 7.02)

AGC of America also sponsors several Safety Awards. The New York State Chapter is pleased to note that BOTHAR Construction and Delaney Construction Corporation are both past recipients of AGC of America's CSEA Awards.

  • The AGC Annual Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) program, sponsored by Willis, is an effort by AGC of America to recognize companies that have developed and implemented excellent safety and loss prevention programs achieved through management commitment, employee training and program innovation. Applications are available in the summer of each year.

  • The Construction Industry Safety Excellence Awards (CISE) program recognizes commendable safety management and safety improvements of owner member companies of the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT). Members of AGC of America may be nominated by AGC to be considered for one of the CISE awards. Applications are due July 1 of each year.

Work Zone Safety Information

The New York State Chapter has long made the safety of highway construction work zones a priority. We work closely with NYSDOT, FHWA, NYSTA and others to improve the design, enforcement and efforts to educate workers and the traveling public to the dangers of work zones. We are pleased that Governor George Pataki has signed the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, which increases penalties on those caught speeding in work zones.

In 2004, the New York State Chapter won a Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Award from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) and the National Safety Council (NSC) in the category of "Private Outreach Campaigns." This category recognizes the efforts of national, state and local private sector organizations that promote roadway work zone safety through implementation of employee and/or public education campaigns and training programs.
