Purpose & Benefits of the Joint Internship Program
The purpose of this internship program is to encourage students who are enrolled in programs of study in Civil Engineering/Technician, Construction Management or other technical majors to pursue careers in the construction engineering and management fields. To address an urgent need for qualified, experienced and motivated technical workers to enter that industry, the 3 major organizations involved with infrastructure construction in New York State: the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACECNY) and Associated General Contractors of New York State (AGCNYS), have come together and formed the Joint Internship Program (JIP).
The JIP serves as a mechanism for students who enter the Program to be guaranteed meaningful, compensated internships in the work environment with 2 or 3 of the Program Partners, depending on their duration of study. The students will have the opportunity to work a single construction season during school breaks for the NYSDOT as a Transportation Construction Inspector, for an Engineering Consultant doing related engineering work or for a Contractor completing construction related technical duties. It’s expected that each student will work for at least 2 of the 3 partners while participating in the JIP.
While in the Program, students will be compensated similar to all other industry internships. Upon completion of the JIP and their program of formal study, the students can enter the workplace with valuable work experience which will help inform their decision regarding first employment in the construction field.
